As a Palestinian in forced exile, my immediate family has not been able to access Palestine in a meaningful way since 1955, the year that my grandfather Nader left Gaza. Since that year, aside from occasional visits, he was never able to return to Gaza to live because of the Israeli occupation’s policy of fragmentation and ethnic cleansing, losing access to the only place our lineage had ever known for thousands of years.
Nevertheless, prior to October 7, 2023, there were still several tangible things left of my family in Gaza.
